Viscore Technologies Launches Multifunction Optical Hybrid - September 2, 2008<
Viscore Technologies Inc., a photonics company based in Ottawa, Canada, today announced the release of its multifunction optical hybrid, a new category of passive optical component designed to reduce equipment footprint and energy use.
"A key contributor to a dynamic and financially healthy telecom industry is the integration of photonic components. This results in more compact and energy efficient systems and drives down overall systems costs. Our multifunction optical hybrid is an excellent example of how we're achieving this with a new generation of passive components," said Leon Liu, CEO of Viscore Technologies .
Now shipping in volume, the new device incorporates several functions in a single package, including an isolator, noise reduction capability, signal monitoring and power monitoring. A lead system design client has used the multifunction optical hybrid to reduce the footprint of a passive module by 75%, while also realizing a significant cost savings "We believe this device to be unique," said Liu. "We're convinced it provides system designers with an important capability for helping to reduce the capital cost of networking equipment , while contributing to more environmentally friendly products through a reduction in components and energy requirements."
He adds: "The initial application for the integrated hybrid includes erbium doped fiber amplifiers, raman amplifiers, and fiber lasers."
